the Hospital

Guy’s and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest hospital trusts in England, UK, with around 17,100 staff; 25,650 Foundation trust members; an annual turnover of almost £1.6 billion; and 2.6 million patient contacts a year.

The problem

Audit and surveillance of IV intravenous access devices was the mainstay of the IV Team. Recent expansion of clinical activities meant the monthly paper-based IVAD audits performed by the team placed a significant burden on their time and energy. Audits had been paper-based, feedback to ward staff was often delayed, and monthly reports were onerous and labour intensive, taking two days to produce.

the Solution

Migrating from paper to a digital, mobile-first Audit Management system with minimal disruption…

With limited time and resources available, MEG’s digital Auditing Management system was initially used by the IV Team for the monitoring and surveillance of intravenous access devices. It was then rolled out to the entire IPC team (50 members) and supporting link nurses for a full Trust-wide (1,200-bed) deployment in a very short period of time, based on excellent user feedback, measurable outcome improvements and demonstrable compliance.

The IV Team in Guy’s and St Thomas’ (GSTT) have been using MEG auditing for over 2 years now and it has been of great benefit. It was really easy to set up and use! We’re carrying out increased surveillance and getting instant feedback which is helping to improve standards.

THE OUTCOME

Faster, accurate data collection and standardised auditing processes and performance tracking across the hospital resulting in improved patient outcomes.

✅ Time required to conduct audits was significantly reduced by 50%

✅ Time to produce reports reduced from days to less than 30 mins

✅ Visual nature of reports engendered interest across the entire Trust
